The JLPT N4 and N5 are the two introductory levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), designed to evaluate basic Japanese language skills. N5 is the most elementary level, assessing the ability to understand basic words, phrases, and simple sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. The test includes three sections: Vocabulary, Grammar & Reading, and Listening, with a total duration of about 90 minutes. N4 is one level higher and tests a broader vocabulary, more kanji, and slightly more complex grammar. It also includes the same three sections, but with a total duration of around 115 minutes. N4 candidates are expected to understand everyday conversations and read short passages. Both levels are useful for beginners learning Japanese and provide a solid foundation for higher levels. The JLPT is widely accepted for education, work, and personal achievement in Japan and around the world.
